Polley's Passion
In a recent article of the Reno Gazette-Journal, Matt Polley (EI 1121), president of the Reno Riverwalk Merchants Association and owner of Java Jungle and Jungle Vino in downtown Reno, is helping lay the foundation for a renewed effort to revamp the downtown river district through a fundraising campaign ("Group looks to beautify downtown river district", page 3D, Reno Gazette-Journal, Sunday, October 30, 2011).
"We want to start a downtown beautification project to improve the riverwalk area's overall appeal for visitors and locals alike who enjoy it," Matt says.
[Editor's Note: If the association's efforts are half as good as Java Jungle's double short breve latte, its goal should be met in no time.]
For more information on the project, go to www.renoriver.org or call 775-825-9255.
Homecoming 2011 Recap
On October 15, Epsilon-Iota Zeta hosted its annual array of UNR Homecoming events.
The day started with a well-attended tailgate party before the UNR/New Mexico game that was open to Alumni and Actives. The event was organized by High Rho Mathew Walter (EI 1391) and featured music, games, a barbecue and refreshments.
At the evening reception, emceed by Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation President Mike Fleiner (EI 1017), more than 50 brothers shared stories and tuned in on the evening's offerings. Mike said a few words about the Foundation's current initiatives and then gave the floor to Thom Collins (EI 756), who presented the Foundation's annual scholarships in memory of Paul Yenter (EI 852; Click here to read more about Paul and the scholarship program). Two $500 scholarships were offered to this year's recipients: High Epsilon, Eli Hsieh (EI 1379), and High Tau, Adam Khan (EI 1381).

Paying It Forward
Nevada Supreme Court Justice James Hardesty (EI 681) was recently featured in the "What I've Learned" section of the Fall 2011 issue of the Nevada Silver & Blue, the official magazine of the University of Nevada, Reno.
Golf Challenge Recap
On August 13, more than 30 Epsilon-Iota Alumni gathered for the inaugural Epsilon-Iota Golf Challenge at Washoe County Golf Course in Reno.
The tournament, coordinated by Matt Sinner (EI 1271, shown below), was in response to an ongoing call for Alumni to get together in between our Homecoming events and Founders' Day celebration.

"We designed it so we can get both the seasoned and new Alumni together," Matt says. "And with this being the first tournament I was very impressed, pleased, and surprised by the turnout." He added that 12 to 15 attendees would have been considered a success for a first-time Alumni event.
The 31 Alumni who participated in the event is the most that have been seen since the 2009 Founders' Day Reception and 80th Anniversary Celebration.
"Hopefully these numbers carry over to Homecoming, Founders' Day, and into next year's tournament," Matt adds.
The 18-hole tournament format was a scramble, with the winning team consisting of (shown, left to right): Leo Myers (EI 911), Ken Schaefer (EI 1245), Seth Stell (EI 1266) and Dave Evasovic (EI 827).

The Longest Drive award went to Casey Barbee, and the Closest to the Pin honors went to Grant Coonley (EI 919, shown).

The tournament was followed by dinner and drinks at The Wolf Den on the UNR campus where prizes, awards, pitchers, Awful Awfuls, and stories were passed around from one generation of Chops to another.
After dinner, those Alumni not able to make the tournament, as well as some of the Active Chapter, came together for the Third Annual LXA Pub Golf.
"To be honest, I don't think that anyone was ready that night for 40-plus Chops swarming the streets of Downtown Reno, and I must give credit where credit is due," Matt says, noting how the "Old Guys" hung in tough, with most of them making it to the final bar.
"Once a Chop always a Chop," Matt concludes. "And those guys certainly proved it on and off the course."
Opportunity Knocks -- Now More Than Ever
Submitted by Mike Fleiner (EI 1017),
President, Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation
The bond of Brotherhood for many of our members extend well beyond our college years, and your Alumni Council and the Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation have worked very hard during the last seven years to provide our Alumni brothers with current and timely information that is designed to strengthen these ties.
As Homecoming approaches we are are hopeful that our efforts will pay off with strong attendance at both our Homecoming Tailgater and Reception. We are also going to use this opportunity to try and pursuade some of you to step out of the shadows to give some of your experience and time back to Lambda Chi Alpha. I want to be as honest and as blunt with regard to our need for significantly more Alumni involvement. And given that the number of Alumni who have stepped forward now find themselves working double-time to meet the minimum obligations to keep the Foundation, Alumni Council or House Board alive, I can honestly promise you that without some new blood and active paricipation and involvement, our efforts will wither on the vine in the near future.
Our recent NewsCard -- sent to all Alumni who are unable to receive our monthly e-mail digests -- listed several areas that we are in desperate need of Alumni involvement. To reiterate, let me take a moment to expand on these areas in more detail.
Kappa Lambda Educational FoundationWe currently have seven Alumni serving and participating on the board. Several of these members have been serving for the last seven years and one in particular has been on the board since it was created. The primary goal of the Foundation is to raise money from our Alumni that is used to fund scholarships for our undergraduate brothers. We are in constant need of candidates that would be willing to give us a small amount of their time to serve on this very important board.
Epsilon-Iota Alumni CouncilThe Alumni Council is a critical group of Alumni that help to coordinate and promote our Alumni events (Founders Day, Homecoming, Alumni Picnic, Alumni Golf). Although we have had some success in recruiting some of our younger Alumni to serve on the Council, we have had some losses due to re-location and are seeking interested brothers (young and old) to serve.
Kappa Lambda, Inc.You all remember the "House Board", the group of Alumni that manage the physical property. We currently have three Alumni that are serving and have held this positions for over ten years. We are seeking Alumni that can help us with taking on the role of property manager/landlord. We ask that you would commit to serving a two-year term, and are looking for at least three brothers to come in and work with the current officers to learn what is needed and required to be successful.
High Pi (Alumni Adviser)Probably one of the most critical and influencial positions that an Alumni can really give back to the fraterinity. We are looking for candidates that would be willing to serve a two-year term, which includes attending Monday night meetings during the school year. Our current High Pi (John Blauth, EI 1057) has done an exemplary job in helping stabilize chapter operations and serving as a liaison between the National Fraternity, the University and the Active Chapter, and will provide all the training necessary to ensure that your experience is both successful and rewarding.
As you can see, the need is very great and I can guarantee that if we are unable to garner the interest from our Alumni brothers in the not to distant future that our ability to sustain what has been achieved will be significantly diminished if not completely undone. Please understand that this is not intended to be anything other than a plea for help. With the number of Epsilon-Iota Alumni that live in or around Reno, one would think that this should provide an ample pool of interested candidates. However, this has not been the case. It is not fair that a small few must carry the torch of Alumni responsibility into perpetuity. We will work with any interested Alumni, no matter where you live. ALL WE NEED IS TO KNOW THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED. We will work with you in any way to ensure that you can be an active and contributing Alumni supporter.

In Memoriam
Epsilon-Iota mourns the loss of Frank Sala (EI 406), who passed away on September 14.
The Sala family has long-time roots in the Reno area. In the early 1900s, his grandparents, Antonio and Savina Sala, owned the ranch on the site of the Lightning W Ranch development located in Carson Valley. His grandfather was instrumental in building the little country schoolhouse on Franktown Road so that Frank's father, Frank Sala, Sr. and his aunt Rose Sala Bullis would be able to receive an education.
Frank attended local schools and graduated from the University of Nevada in 1952. While at the university, he was a member of ROTC. Upon entering the Navy in 1952, he completed naval flight training in Pensacola, Florida and later served as a navigator on a destroyer during the Korean War.
Upon discharge from active service in 1956 Frank enrolled at George Washington Law School. While there he received high scholastic recognition and was invited by the faculty board of advisory editors to participate in the work of the George Washington Law Review. However, as he was working a full time job as an employee of the U.S. Senate, he had to decline the honor. Before leaving Washington, D.C. he passed the District of Columbia bar exam in 1958.
It was in Washington, D.C. that Frank and his wife, Arline, met and married. Arline was also from Reno and was employed as a Congressional secretary.
After passing the Nevada bar exam on his return to Reno in 1958, he served as a clerk for the Nevada State Supreme Court before entering private practice.
In 1962, early in Frank's career, he had a case representing property owners in northeast Reno whose homes were being condemned by the City of Reno in conjunction with a federal urban renewal project. The area at the beginning of the project included 450 acres, but was finally reduced to 42 acres: north of E. 4th St., east of Wells, south of 6th Street and west of Sage.
The Reno City Council was anxious to acquire federal funds to clear the area for commercial development in spite of the fact that it was not a "blighted area". In fact, it was populated by long-term residents who maintained their homes and had lived there for decades.
After a month-long trial, District Judge Clel Georgetta ruled the action was illegal and that their property should not be confiscated and that they should be able to profit from any future development. The group Frank Sala represented was ecstatic and they placed an ad in the Nevada State Journal praising "his single-handed fight and steadfast efforts in their behalf in the victory of the court proceedings involving the Urban Renewal Agency". Regretfully the Nevada State Supreme Court reversed the decision and the project continued.
It left a lasting impression on Frank about the efficacy of government intrusion in the natural evolution of a neighborhood and it is interesting to note that after millions of taxpayer dollars were spent, along with the displacement of hundreds of residents, you can observe 50 years later what the project really accomplished.
Frank was a great swimmer and enjoyed abalone diving on the Mendocino coast. He also liked to spearfish in Baja and as an accomplished pilot he found a great deal of pleasure flying his plane to these locations. He had a lifelong interest in history, cars, and American coins. Frank was also a man of integrity, generosity, and humor.
Frank is survived by his loving family Arline, his wife of 53 years, his daughter Susan Story and grandchildren Mackenzie and Jack. They will always be grateful for his love, guidance and wisdom. He is also survived by his cousin, Gary Bullis and his wife, Louise.
The family wishes to thank the nurses, CNA's and aides in the Oncology Ward at Renown hospital. They also wish to thank the compassionate caretakers at VistaCare Hospice. Their gratitude is also extended to oncologist, Suresh Reddy, M.D. and surgeon, Harold Kennedy, M.D.

In Memoriam
Epsilon-Iota mourns the loss of George Yori (EI 272), who passed away on May 21.
He was born February 2, 1923 to George A. and Vera (Minetto) Yori at his grandmother's home on Winter Street in Reno. The son of a pioneer ranching family, he spent much of his early years growing up and working on his father's ranches in the Pah Rah mountain range northeast of Sparks in the area now known as Palomino Valley. George A. Yori raised sheep and cattle on the Home Ranch and Wilcox Ranches, and later sold them to Jim Stead, whose son would later become the namesake of Stead Air Force Base north of Reno.
He often told fascinating stories of the joys and hardships of a young man driving livestock between summer ranges in Northeastern California and the winter ranges on Wabuska Mountain and the Carson River, during times when ranching in Western Nevada was wide open and free.
He attended Northside School in Reno and graduated from Reno High School in the class of 1942. Thanks to a scholarship from the Sears Roebuck Company, he was able to attend the University of Nevada where he pursued a degree in agricultural mechanics. His education was interrupted by service in the US Marines for World War II, where he saw action in the Pacific theatre, including battles on Iwo Jima, Tinian, and Guam. He was commissioned second Lieutenant in March 1945. At War's end in 1946, he returned home to Reno and married the love of his life, Genevieve Katherine Siri. George subsequently completed his education at the University of Nevada and joined his father in the construction business in Reno, where they developed numerous residential properties. He returned to active duty with the Marines in 1950, to serve in the Korean War. Attaining the rank of Captain, he saw action in numerous battles including Inchon, and the Chosin Reservoir.
In 1954, George joined the faculty at Reno High School, where he taught welding and metal fabrication until moving on to become Chairman of the Industrial Arts Department at the new Earl Wooster High School in 1962. Many of his students went on to become leaders in the building and construction industry in Northern Nevada. George later became director of new construction for the Washoe County School District, where he was responsible for building many new schools, including Hug High School. During his service as an administrator, he earned a Master's Degree in Education at the University of Nevada and retired in 1983 after 29 years of service with the Washoe County School District.
In 1973, George and wife Genevieve, together with members of the Carano, Siri, and Poncia families, opened the Eldorado Hotel and Casino in Reno, which has become one of the most successful gaming and entertainment properties in Northern Nevada.
George's pride and joy was his family and especially his two grandchildren. He loved the wide open spaces, being outdoors, and living the rural farming and ranching lifestyle. He often enjoyed fishing at Pyramid Lake, duck hunting in Fallon, and just spending time on the family ranch. He also enjoyed the company of many lifelong friends and was a regular member of the ROMEO's (Retired Old Men Eating Out), a group of long time Northern Nevada business and professional men who meet weekly for lunch at various restaurants in Reno.
George was preceded in Death by his wife Genevieve in 2002, and is survived by son Larry, daughter-in-law Mary, and grandchildren Jennifer and Anthony.

Epsilon-Iota mourns the loss of Cameron Batjer (EI 216), retired Nevada Supreme Court Justice and 2008 Epsilon-Iota Legacy Center inductee, who passed away on June 1 at age 91.
Batjer was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1967 by Republican Gov. Paul Laxalt and served until 1981, when Republican President Ronald Reagan appointed him to the U.S. Parole Commission.
He retired that post in 1990 and settled in Reno and Maui, Hawaii.
Supreme Court Chief Justice Michael Douglas said in a statement that Batjer's "evenhanded temperament" will be missed in today's "partisan world."
Justice Ron Parraguirre said Batjer was a mentor to him and a close friend of his father.
"He was an extremely bright, compassionate man who was never without a broad grin," Parraguirre said in a statement. "We have lost a true gentleman who was a credit to the Supreme Court and the state of Nevada."
Batjer was born in 1919 in Smith, Nev. His father, Robert Batjer, emigrated from Germany in the early 1890s and settled in Smith Valley, where he was a rancher and operated a freight business that served the mining camps, according to the Supreme Court.
His mother, Mary Belle McVicar, was a University of Nevada graduate who taught in Smith Valley and at other Nevada schools.
Batjer graduated from the University of Nevada [Reno] and earned a law degree from the Utah Law School.
His wife, Lura Gamble, was the aunt of Ninth Judicial District Judge David Gamble.
Their daughter, Marybel Batjer of Las Vegas, served as chief of staff for Republican Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn from 2000 to 2003 and was cabinet secretary and chief policy adviser for Republican California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
"Justice Batjer was a great scholar and jurist who understood the virtues of brevity, common sense and kindness," former Justice Kristina Pickering said in a statement. "I hold the seat he did and have deep respect for his work and the steady hand with which he steered the court during his years of service."

Founders' Day Recap
The Epsilon-Iota Zeta's 82nd Founders' Day Celebration and Reception was held on March 26 at the Chapter House. More than 40 Alumni and Undergraduates were in attendance, some returning for the first time in many years.
The reception was preceded by the fourth annual Alumni vs. Actives softball game, organized by High Rho Mathew Walter (EI 1391) and played at Idlewild Park in Reno, where the Actives trounced the Alumni, 23-11. The victory evens the series at 2-2.
At the reception, brothers young and old shared stories, recaptured friendships and celebrated the bond of Epsilon-Iota Zeta. The reception, emceed by Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation President Mike Fleiner (EI 1017), featured cocktails, light hors d'oevres and a rundown of Epsilon-Iota Alumni Council and Educational Foundation activities.
This year's reception also featured the distribution of two scholarships by Thom Collins (EI 756), on behalf of the Foundation's Scholarship Program and the Paul Yenter Memorial Scholarship Fund. Recipients were High Tau Jack Larson (EI 1390), $500, and High Sigma Joe Jennings (EI 1417), $500.

Time And Again
Submitted by Mike Fleiner (EI 1017),
President, Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation
As we enter the 82nd anniversary of our chapter and start planning our annual family picnic this summer, the Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation, Epsilon-Iota Alumni Council and Kappa Lambda Inc. (aka House Board) find ourselves at a crossroads. While this may not be a unique situation in the course our history, it's that time again. Time to invest in our future.
As you may be aware, the Foundation continues in its efforts to award scholarships to deserving undergraduate members. The Alumni Council has worked tirelessly over the last four years to restore Alumni contact and relations. (Look no further than this Web site for proof.) But with every victory comes a new challenge.
Our House Board leadership has reached its normal course in which the core officers, President K.C. Wuelfing (EI 1140) and Treasurer Jeremy Ocshner (EI 1165) need to step down and new ones need to come forward. Our Alumni Council, who helps plan alumni gatherings throughout the year, is always in need of new faces and the new ideas they bring. Our Active Chapter has seen tremendous success in recruitment in the last three years, averaging 60 members. They are highly motivated to continue recruiting young men that share their passion. We need to leverage that passion.
So what can you do?
- Keep in touch. Click here or call 775-225-4985 with the latest word on you, your career, your family, etc.
- Get involved. Step up and lend your time and expertise to the Foundation and/or House Board. Even if you are not in the Reno area, you can still make a difference in this digital age. E-mail me at mikefleiner@bidart-ross.com or call 775-826-0423 for details.
- Make a donation. Click here or call or call me 775-826-0423.
- Invest in your Zeta's future. Consider taking on a role in the development of an Alumni-based limited liability company (LLC) that will assume ownership of the Chapter House and pay down the $250,000 note that financed our 2002-2003 restoration.
These are exciting times, and I urge all Alumni to take part in the ongoing success of our Zeta. Thank you in advance for your assistance and support.

One for the Books
In the spirit of such best-selling books as Tom Brokaw's The Greatest Generation and The Greatest Generation Speaks, which documents a number of Americans who came of age during the Great Depression and World War II, Charles "Chuck" McAvoy (EI 275) compiled his inspirational life story in an autobiography titled Journey (2004, Xlibris Corp.).
"When I first read Brokaw's book, I was thrilled and amazed at the life stories of the people of my generation," Chuck recalled. "I was also struck by the fact that my life, while not gaining national prominence, had been just as interesting and with as much variety and accomplishment as those Brokaw wrote about."
In Journey, Chuck chronicles the many hardships and triumphs in his professional and personal life. He recalled such experiences as being raised in Sparks, jumping out of airplanes in WW II, serving on active duty with the Nevada Air National Guard during the Korean War, flying airplanes for more than 50 years, and having an extraordinary career with "Ma Bell" (starting with Nevada Bell as a craftsman and retiring 40 years later as Area Vice President for Pacific Bell in the San Francisco Bay region). He also reflected on the impact of his religious faith.
In the six years since his book was published, Chuck reflects on the exciting (and sometimes exhausting) endeavor of recalling his life's exeriences, and the reaction to it has been overwhelmingly favorable. He aded that it would be an inspiration to both old and new Lambda Chis.
Journey is available on amazon.com. [Click here for more information]

The Latest Word
Submitted by Mike Fleiner (EI 1017),
President, Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation
To help in our efforts to reconnect with fellow Alumni, we have added another event to our annual list. Our first family picnic was held on August 14 at Crystal Peak Park in Verdi, NV. We had about six alumni and their families attend, with a golf outing that morning at Crystal Peak Golf Course. We will be scheduling the date for next year's event in early 2011 and would urge all of you and your families to attend.
Our mission to sustain a perpetual fundraising program continues to gain traction. However, we remain short of our goal of 100 Alumni contributing $100 per year. I again urge you, if you are not participating in our 80/20 Perpetual Giving Campaign, to make the effort and click here, give what you can and check the boxes for the 80/20 contribution plan and the 100 for $100 or call Travis Anderson (EI 1259) at 775-232-6209 for more information. The money raised is used to provide scholarships to our undergraduate members and to enrich the Chapter House's capital improvement fund.
Finally, we are working on the development of a new LLC (Limited Liability Company) that will refinance the Chapter House via an investment partnership containing Epsilon-Iota Zeta Alumni by 2012. We hope to have the LLC registered with the state and ready to begin funding by early 2011, and are looking for a custodian that can handle both taxable and non-taxable participants. The details of this program will be communicated in the next few months.

Yes, that Tony Blair
Kurt Herzog (EI 941, right), President & CEO of Acutherm, Inc., a Hayward, CA-based company that designs, manufactures and distributes a line of modular variable air volume (VAV) systems and thermally powered VAV diffusers for use in HVAC systems, was one of 10 California business owners recently invited by Farmers Insurance Group to a private meeting with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair (left).
The event was a one-hour, round-table discussion that focused primarily on world economics and the political will (or lack of it) to address the current issues associated with governmental deficit spending.
"Almost every government around the world is facing similar issues to the United States with respect to what continued deficit spending means for future generations," Kurt noted. "Mr. Blair referred to 'the arithmetic as compelling', meaning change will happen one way or another. Discussions on the best solutions and the political will to make rapid and necessary changes, however, is not as clear as the arithmetic."

Your Honor, Your Honor
Congratulations to Nevada Supreme Court Justice James Hardesty (EI 681), who earlier this year was the first-ever honoree of the Public Interest Law Association (PILA) of the William S. Boyd School of Law in Las Vegas.
Justice Hardesty was recognized for his 30 years of public service as an attorney, on the bench of the Second Judicial District Court and on the Nevada Supreme Court where he served as Chief Justice in 2009.
A distinguished Epsilon-Iota alum, Justice Hardesty also served as emcee of the Founders' Day Reception and 80th Anniversary Celebration in April 2009. Although it's an entirely different honor, the Zeta is equally grateful.
Martie's Move
Congratulations to John Martie (EI 431), who was recently hired by Dickson Commercial Real Estate (formerly Fennell & Associates, LLC) in Reno, a leading seller of commercial real estate including industrial, office, retail, multi-family residential, land acquisition, bank-owned and foreclosed properties, residential and commercial development and investment properties. His areas of expertise include hotel/casino properties, commercial buildings and land.
John, a licenced business broker, brings seven years of real estate experience to the position, plus more than 30 years in the gaming industry in the Reno and Las Vegas areas.

Kudos to Mike Maupin (EI 1139), a Reno high school teacher who recently threw his hat into the ring and is running for Nevada State Assembly in District 26, which includes west Reno up to Lake Tahoe and down into the Pleasant Valley and north Washoe Valley areas [map].
Mike's key issues include education, fiscal responsibility, the mortgage crisis, the 21st century economy and bipartisanship. He is also the son of Bill Maupin (EI 646), retired chief justice for the Nevada State Supreme Court and 2009 inductee to the Epsilon-Iota Legacy Center.

Founders' Day Recap
The Epsilon-Iota Zeta's 81st Founders' Day Celebration and Reception was held on April 10 at the Chapter House. More than 50 Alumni and Undergraduates were in attendance, some returning for the first time in many years.
The reception was preceded by the third annual Alumni vs. Actives softball game, organized by High Rho Alex Fleiner (EI 1319) and played at Idlewild Park in Reno, where the Actives topped the Alumni (shown, in gray), 19-14. The rubber-match victory puts the Actives ahead, 2-1, in the three-game series. Special thanks to Alum Travis Anderson (EI 1259), who covered the cost of the commemorative Alumni jerseys.
At the reception, brothers young and old shared stories, recaptured friendships and celebrated the bond of Epsilon-Iota Zeta. The reception, emceed by Kappa Lambda Foundation President Mike Fleiner (EI 1017), featured cocktails, light hors d'oevres and a rundown of Epsilon-Iota Alumni Council and Educational Foundation activities, which included a kick-off of this year's fundraising drive that inspired an impromptu collection of more than $300 in donations to the Foundation.
This year's reception also featured the distribution of two scholarships by Thom Collins (EI 756; below, center), on behalf of the Foundation's Scholarship Program and the Paul Yenter Memorial Scholarship Fund. Recipients were Kevin Schlegel (EI 1342; below, right), $1,000, and High Alpha Doug Crossley (EI 1324; below, left), $500.
"Founders' Day not only serves as a time to gather and celebrate, but is a springboard for future involvement in the House," said Alum Seth Stell (EI 1266). "So it's no coincidence that Alumni who were past scholarship recipients are here today to honor this year's recipients."
Upcoming Alumni events include a barbecue this summer and the annual Homecoming Celebration in October 9, so stay tuned for upcoming announcements.
2010 Perpetual Giving Campaign
Submitted by Mike Fleiner (EI 1017),
President, Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation
In the year since our 80th Anniversary Celebration, where we introduced a vision for our future fundraising efforts, we continue to establish a philosophy of perpetual giving that would create a sustainable level of financial support for the Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation and for future capital improvements to the chapter house including paying down the debt in the near term. Although the idea was warmly accepted during last year's event, the actual contributions to this campaign have been very disappointing. Although we remain energized by the simple fact that the active chapter is really excelling on campus, we continue to wonder what it is we need to do to get our alumni to jump on board with our fundraising goals.
Since 2005 the Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation has distributed $8,000 worth of scholarships to a number of very deserving undergraduate brothers. Since 2005, the Foundation has raised $8,570, an average of $1,700 per year. Approximately, $2,000 of this was derived from going back to brothers that had pledged money for the Chapter House Restoration Project in 2003, but had neglected to actually fund their pledge. Although we are -- and remain -- grateful to those Alumni who have provided their financial support, it will be impossible to maintain our level of scholarship giving without a continued and consistent stream of ongoing contributions.
For 2009, it was our fundraising goal for 100 alumni to make a minimum annual commitment of $100. The actual numbers came in at less than 10 alumni making contributions to the Foundation or to the 80/20 campaign totaling just under $2,500. We have the same goal for 2010, and this year you can expect to receive a phone call from one of our active brothers. They will be calling you to update our database records, answer any questions you may have of the Active Chapter and encourage you to make a financial donation to the Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation.
We understand that times are difficult, and we are sensitive to the fact that many of you are already supporting a number of different organizations. This is why we are asking for a modest ongoing level of financial support. We are working on adding an electronic payment method option to our alumni website and are hopeful that we can have this up and running by our Founders' Day Celebration on April 10. In the meantime, you can do your part by going to the pledge form and checking the appropriate donation box for the 80/20 contribution plan and the 100 for $100. If you can contribute at a higher level, please denote your desired dollar amount. By filling out the form and mailing it in with your 2010 donation, you begin the process by which we can guarantee that our great chapter can keep the stories alive and continue the rich tradition of preparing young men for the future for the next 80 years.

LeRoy and Ellen were married on April 4, 1964 and moved to Reno that same year.
"LeRoy began practicing law in Reno in 1964. Throughout his career, he was considered one of the true gentlemen of the legal profession. He loved the practice of law. He was very proud to be law partners with his son John and daughter Christine. He never retired, coming in to work up until the day before he passed away.
"LeRoy was extremely involved in the community. He was a founder and first President of the Reno Zazpiak Basque Club, former President of the Washoe County Bar Association, one of the founding members of the Nevada Trial Lawyers Association, former President and member of the Reno Host Lions Club, former Chairman of the Washoe County Democratic Party, former President of the Reno Aquatic Club, a member of the Humboldt Hunt Club, the Prospectors Club, the Gold and Silver coffee group and the Nevada Woodchucks. 2009 Founders' Day Honors Past, Sets Tone for Zeta's Future
The 2009 Founders' Day Reception and 80th Anniversary Celebration was held on Saturday, April 18 from 7-9 pm at the Joe Crowley Student Union on the UNR campus. Nearly 100 alumni, undergraduates, spouses and guests were in attendance, some returning for the first time in many years.
The reception was preceded by the second annual Alumni vs. Actives softball game, organized by High Rho Jeremiah Todd (EI 1296) and played at Idlewild Park, where the Alumni (shown, in purple sleeves) evened the series at 1-1 by soundly defeating the Actives (shown, in green sleeves), 18-13.
The evening event, emceed by Nevada State Supreme Court Chief Justice James Hardesty (EI 681), featured a state of the active chapter address by High Alpha Ray Gorman (EI 1305), an unveiling of the new Active Chapter web site (http://www.unrlxa.com/) by Doug Crossley (EI 1324) and a distribution of two scholarships courtesy of the Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation Scholarship Fund by KC Wuelfing (EI 1140) to recipients Mario Cruz (EI 1362; $1,500) and Jack Dailey (EI 1337; $1,000).
In addition, three new members of the Epsilon-Iota Legacy Center were inducted into the Epsilon-Iota Legacy Center: Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation Board member and overseer of the 2002-2003 Chapter house Restoration Project Thomas Hultin (EI 1000); legendary University of Nevada coach and Athletic Department patriarch John E. "Doc" Martie (posthumous; accepted by his son John A. Martie, EI 431); and former Nevada State Supreme Court Chief Justice Bill Maupin (EI 646).
The evening culminated with a special 50-minute 80th anniversary tribute emceed by Rick Casazza (EI 873) and presenation featuring a photo/slide show and recollections of the Kappa Lambda fraternity, and a decade-by-decade recollection of key events in the history of Kappa Lambda and the Epsilon-Iota Zeta as well as memories presented by Larry Struve (EI 572) Bill MacDonald (EI 420), Erik Beyer (EI 470), Gene Gardella (EI 563), Thom Collins (EI 756), TJ Cox (EI 965), Carlos Ledon (EI 1180), Travis Anderson (EI 1259), Larry Burton (EI 765) and Joel Muller (EI 1050). Watch for an abbreviated, online version of the tribute which will be uploaded to this site in the near future.
A vision for the future of Epsilon-Iota Zeta was presented by High Pi and chair of the Epsilon-Iota Alumni Council Mike Fleiner (EI 1017), and was followed by an informal rollout of the 2009 Perpetual Giving 80/20 Campaign to raise funds for the Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation and the Kappa Lambda, Inc. (aka House board) Debt Reduction and Capital Improvement Fund. The goal for 2009 is to secure an ongoing annual commitment of $100 from 100 alumni. We hope to have alumni direct 80 percent of this contribution to the Educational Foundation and 20 percent to the Debt Reduction and Capital Improvement Fund. To help kick-off the drive, several alumni called out their respective pledge for support, including a $1,000 pledge by Erik Beyer to both the Foundation and the Debt Reduction and Capital Improvement Fund.
"Gathering from both the attendance, the participation effort and energy put into the day's events from across both the Active and Alumni ranks, we have no doubt set the tone for future alumni events and have succeeded in restoring our correspondence with alumni across the Zeta," said Mike Fleiner, who helped organize the reception. "The momentum we gained from this event will surely carry our Active and Alumni programs and initiatives well into the future."

Homecoming & Anniversary Kick-off Recap
The Epsilon-Iota Zeta's 2008 UNR Homecoming Reception and Anniversary Kick-off was a huge success, with more than 30 Alumni and dozens of Active members present. And as with this past year's Founders' Day celebration, some Alumi had returned for the first time in several years.
The reception featured countless recollections of undergraduate years, a slide presentation outlining the future vision of Epsilon-Iota (click here for more information), and the recognition of Mario Cruz (Associate Member), the recipient of Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation's annual $1,000 scholarship in memory of Paul Yenter (EI 852; click here to read more about Paul and the scholarship program). In attendance were officers of the Kappa Lambda Educational Foundation, members of the Epsilon-Iota Alumni Council, Epsilon-Iota Legacy Center inductees DeArmond Sharp (EI 502) and Gene Gardella (EI 563), and recent University of Nevada Hall of Fame inductee Bill Rusk (EI 479; click here for details). An after-party featured a number of keg stands and drinking games to prove, among other things, that some Alumni (and even their spouses!) can still keep up with the Actives.
Special thanks go to High Pi and head of the Epsilon-Iota Alumni Council Mike Fleiner (EI 1017), and High Rho Douglas Crossley (EI 1324) for organizing the event.
The success of this event is helping build momentum for Epsilon-Iota Zeta's 80th anniversary (March 29, 2009) as well as the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity's 100th anniversary and Centennial Celebration (Nov. 9, 2009), so stay tuned for upcoming announcements.
Rusk Honored by Wolf Pack HOF
Congratulations to Bill Rusk (EI 479), who was inducted in the University of Nevada Athletic Hall of Fame at the Nevada Hall of Fame Induction Dinner on October 17 and honored during halftime of the UNR Homecoming/Hall of Fame (football) Game on October 18.
Bill was recognized for his part in the 1955-56 Rifle Team which won the NRA National Championship that year. Bill served as team captain and was a First-Team All-American selection.
"I was told that it was the first time in 50 years that a University of Nevada athelete was a First-Team All-American selection," he says. "The last time was for a member of the Rugby Team in 1906."
Since then, Bill has served in the United States Marine Corps, received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Engineering from California State University, Chico, and his PhD in Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. He currently runs Aqua Systems Engineering, a Danville, CA-based engineering consulting and contracting company specializing in water projects.
Rock on!
Thanks to Kappa Lambda, Inc. (aka House Board), the Chapter House has some added curb appeal with the addition of about a dozen cubic yards of landscape rock on the front and side yards (photos to come).
Additional thanks go to House Board member Carlos Ledon (EI 1180), who got the landscape fabric at cost from his employer, Ferguson Enterprises, Inc.
Stell Gives Intramural Team a Boost
The Active Chapter thanks Seth Stell (EI 1266), who recently donated jerseys for Epsilon-Iota's flag football team.
While the team might not play any better, it sure looks better.

Coming Full Circle
Former High Alpha Bill Christensen (EI 726) is currently writing his autobiography and screening editors for publishing. It's an honest and powerful account of life lessons derived from the surprising number of times throughout his life in which he escaped death, including a hit-and-run accident in 1976 that put him in a coma for 21 days.
"Somehow or other," he says, "I have become a man of charater and a person of value that is loved and respected and appreciated in ways that I never thought possible. In recalling my undergraduate years in the House, I have never forgotten the moments that the men surrounding me saw and knew and loved me in a way that has taken me years to do myself."
To hear more, you'll just have to wait until the book is published or go to the Alumni Directory and contact him personally.

Founders' Day Recap
The Epsilon-Iota Zeta's 79th Founders' Day Celebration and Reception was held on April 5 at the Chapter House. More than 50 alumni and undergraduates were in attendance, some returning for the first time in many years.
The reception was preceded by an Alumni vs. Actives softball game, organized by High Rho Douglas Crossley (EI 1324) and played at Idlewild Park, where the Actives (shown, in green) narrowly defeated a surprisingly agile group of Alumni (shown, in white), 19-17.
At the reception, brothers young and old shared stories, recaptured friendships and celebrated the bond of Epsilon-Iota Zeta. The evening, emceed by High Alpha Jeremiah Todd (EI 1296) and High Pi Mike Fleiner (EI 1017), featured a cocktail reception courtesy of Steve Watson (EI 706), an outstanding meal courtesy of Ruby River Steak House, a formal unveiling and orientation of the new and expanded Epsilon-Iota Alumni Web site by Epsilon-Iota Alumni Council members Mike Fleiner and John Blauth (EI 1057), and the induction of Andrew Morby (EI 130), Cameron Batjer (EI 216), and Larry Struve (EI 572) to the Epsilon-Iota Legacy Center. In addition, a special Alumni Appreciation Award was given to John Blauth for his contribution of time and coordination of efforts in developing our new Web site, and for reconciling and updating the Epsilon-Iota Alumni database.
The recognition and success of this annual event has become increasingly important as 2009 marks the 80th anniversary of Epsilon-Iota Zeta (March 29) and the 100th anniversary and Centennial Celebration of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity (Nov. 9), so stay tuned for upcoming announcements.

Knapp Time
Richard Knapp (EI 595), wants to send a shout-out to those he "served with" at Epsilon-Iota. He retired just over four years ago after being the District 1 Director of the California Department of Transportation in Eureka. While he still enjoyed his job, he decided to retire on his 60th birthday to "do some other things that needed doing."
Since then, Richard and his wife have traveled some: first to Africa, and then to the Galapagos Islands. And a lot of fly fishing in between!
In Memoriam
Epsilon-Iota mourns the loss of Ted Kerstetter (EI 384; shown with granddaughter Eliza), who passed away on March 7.
He was born in Milwaukee, Wis., and raised in Nevada, where he graduated from the University of Nevada (Reno) in 1959.
He spent four years in the U.S. Navy before continuing his education in the State of Washington. He earned a M.S. and Ph.D. at WSU in Pullman, then entered the academic world where he was both an educator and a research scientist. When he retired, he was a professor of Zoology and Physiology at Humboldt State University, Arcata, Calif.
Ted's restless nature led him to test post-retirement living at a variety of locations: New England, Washington State, Oregon and finally the Bitterroot Valley of Montana, where he lived from 1998 until his passing. His love affair with bicycles led him on both solo and group bike tours in Europe, Alaska, and several parts of the Pacific Northwest, including Montana.
He is survived by son and daughter-in-law Greg and Janet Kerstetter, Northampton, MA; son and daughter-in-law Brad and Jessie Kerstetter, Victor, Idaho; sister Mary Ann Kerstetter, Las Vegas, N.M. and grandchildren, Sam and Maya Kerstetter (Northampton, Mass.) and Isaac and Eliza Kerstetter (Victor, Idaho). He would hope that laughter and good cheer predominate his passing, and that his passing would be recognized as the universal life event that all of us are approaching.
A little Help?
For the last several months, Warren Welsh (EI 331) has been searching for a pin to replace the one he gave his wife his wife, Letitia. The one he gave her years ago was lost at the jewelers. If you can provide him any phone numbers of businsses that provide replacement or custom pins, call him at 973-383-3279.
Fortunately, the issue hasn't fazed the Rutgers University Professor Emeritus' volunteer work with the Sussex County (NJ) Office of Farmland Preservation and the New Jersey State Fair® / Sussex County Farm and Horse Show.
Good Brothers Hunting...Chukar
For the last several years (shown, left to right), Kyle Swanson (EI 972), Mike Fleiner (EI 1017) and Mike Wolder (EI 1018) meet in Winnemucca between Christmas and New Year's to hunt the Mighty Chukar. On occasion they are joined by Rodger Stone (EI 1015) and Mike Shanks (EI 1052).
Coincidentally, all five brothers hunt with Brittany Spaniels, and have had many enjoyable outings over the years. It just goes to show that the Bond of Brotherhood continues well beyond the college years.
It's a Boy!
Congratulations to Chad Davis (EI 1137) and wife Lori on the birth of son Quinn, who joins fellow future Chops Aidan, 6, and Rylan, 3.

Eric Beye (EI 994), Intervention Specialist with the Washoe County School District in Reno, was featured in a Jan. 17 Reno News & Review article about Washoe County Schools working to improve high school graduation rates. [read more]
Now if we only knew how to reach him so we can remove him from the Lost Brothers list...
On the Move
Congratulations to Glen Mulhall (EI 1112), who was recently hired by New York, New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. He is responsible for all aspects of the Financial Analysis Department. His most recent position was Finance Project Manager for the MGM MIRAGE.
Glen has an 11-year old son, two rottweilers and, as the proud owner of a 1965 Ford Mustang, a love for classic cars.
Out and About
Chris Coye (EI 1109) is in London for the next few years as part of his duties as Vice President of Media Technology with Disney ABC Television Group. His wife Amanda, their two kids (Isabella, 9 and Sawyer, 6) are enjoying London (probably more than he does!). After spending the last 11 years in sunny southern California, this is a big change for the Coyes, and one that hopefully won't last the full two-year commitment.
If any of you are in London, please let him know (He says he always needs Americans to talk to, because there is just something about breaking through the shell of the Brits!) Email: thecoyes@gmail.com.
(Farther) Out and About
Wes Wright (EI 1103) is stationed in Bamberg, Germany as a part of the 173d Airborne Brigade Combat Team for the United States Army. He is the Operations Officer (military job title: Battalion S3) for the Support Battalion (i.e. Logistics), running the planning, coordinating, and tracking of his Battalion's tactical operations, communications, intelligence, and security.
His Brigade was recently deployed in the northeastern portion of Afghanistan, operating primarily out of a Forward Operating Base in the vicinity of Jalalabad. When listening to the news, they will talk about the Afghan providences of Laghman, Konar, Nuristan, and Nangarhar. Wes has been there since May 2007, and was lucky enough to get caught up in the "surge", which means he doesn't leave until August 2008.
This is Wes' third deployment in support of our country's War on Terrorism. He was a company commander in the 82nd Airborne Division, and deployed in the early stages of both Afghanistan (Summer 2002), and Iraq (Summer 2003).
The 'White' Stuff
Congratulations to David White (EI 1105) and wife Christina on the birth of son Alexander Charles.
